It’s time for us to have a look at dreamscaper. We have been  playing dreamscaper for a while on our twitch stream, and now we’re going to do a little review on it and see what we think about it. As always, we’re going to start by reading what they tell us on steam to see if this is accurate, to what we have experienced in the game.

Dreamscaper is an endlessly replayable action roguelike with a waking and dreaming gameplay cycle. By night delve into your subconscious facing nightmares in an ever changing world, filled with unique items, abilities and challenges. By day, explore the city of Redhaven, build relationships and unlock permanent upgrades in order to take on the next dream, stronger than ever.

All these are accurate, we have experienced all of those in the game. We’ll start with the waking world where you can go into the city of Redhaven, as you move on, you unlock more locations like a bar, a record store, library, and so on and so forth. In those places, you meet people, you talk with them, the dialogues are pretty nice actually, to read and enjoy the storyline. The more you get to know them the more perks you unlock for your character, which you take on permanently when you go into your subconscious in your dreaming world to fight your nightmares.

When you enter your dream world and you start fighting your nightmares, the game gives you, at least at the beginning, a new set of weapons this a random setup for you every time. As you level up, of course, you have to set up what you want to start with in your journal. Whether you want to start with your sword or your Katana, you want to start with a Warhammer or any other spell, you make your own setup.

The map in the game is actually pretty nice. It’s divided into different rooms, you go through portals, if you want to travel back, let’s say five rooms backwards, you just open the map, click it and you instantly go. I always loved fast travel in games, the graphics are really good and engaging. I haven’t found any bugs and glitches. It’s a really fun game. When it comes to combat, is really fluent.

The controller I’m using, although not an official one, is really responsive. Combat is very engaging, you have to position yourself right, you have to time some of your attacks, you definitely need to get good at dodging, especially when you have a lot of enemies. You have to be careful when to attack and when to retreat, again, when you have a lot of enemies. You can’t just go into this slashing everything up. While you go into your subconscious, deeper and deeper, you unlock more rooms which have shops, upgrades, healing potions, and so on.

I would like to point out right here, the fact that healing potions are very important. And you should remember where they are because you can not carry items with you, but you can go back in the rooms and use the items that are dropped, they  don’t disappear. And they are important because this works in a hardcore way when you’re progressing through the game. And what I mean by that, is that if you die, you’re in a dream you wake up.

So when you go back to sleep you restart your nightmare. You start from level one, which means you have to go through the map, find the boss and kill it. If you want, you have the option to skip it, and then go to level two and carry on from there. Level three, level four wherever you died. Because this is a progressive dream. This the only hardcore, if you like, part of the game.

Other than that this game has very positive reviews on Steam both from the users and from various magazines, and along with them, I’m going to give it a 9/10 because this game is amazing. It is engaging, it is fun, and it is one of those games that will get you hooked and addicted to playing it, every day. As always, you can find a link to this game for steam underneath this post and if you do decide to check this game out and play it, please do let us know what you think about it.
